What is the Fruit of the Spirit? And how can we as Christians exhibit that fruit even more?

People may tell you, “here’s the list of the fruits of the Spirit,” although it’s not fruits, it’s fruit. And I don’t know if that makes a big difference, but that is what it says in the Bible. I try to be a stickler with that. S

o it is the Fruit of the Spirit.

And I’ve had people tell me that I’ll be a better Christian when I exhibit these fruit.

Let’s look at what those fruit are: The Fruit of the Spirit is in Galatians 5: 22- 23. I recommend reading Galatians 5. It’s not long but there’s a lot in it that Paul unpacks. And I do I recommend that you read and meditate on it. Pray to God to show you what he wants you see through those scriptures.

Here’s the nine Fruit of the Spirit. They are: Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control.

Now, if you’re like me, I look at that list and ask if I have peace. Patience? Not really. Faithfulness? I’m faithful to my wife, that’s for sure. Self control? Ooh, that’s a tough one.

So I’m sure you’re looking at some of those too. Some people have a tough time with joy, especially with everything that’s going on in the world today, it’s not easy to exhibit joy.

How do we exhibit these Fruit of the Spirit? And if we can’t exhibit these Fruit of the Spirit, are we not being great Christians?

I think we get it wrong. I think that we feel that we need to show the Fruit of the Spirit in our lives, and that is something we need to work toward.

But let’s look at what Jesus said because I really like this. Think of all the people that Jesus healed in the Bible. And if you think of it, Jesus actually didn’t heal anybody. Neither did God. If you look at it, there’s at least six or seven places in the Bible (I talked about this in Episode 28 about faith). Jesus, never once said, “your works have healed you.” He never said, “you touched my robe, you were healed.” What did he say? “Your faith has healed you.” They had faith that doing certain things would heal them. And it was their faith that healed them, not the things that they did. That wasn’t works, it was faith. So listen to episode 28.

I’ve been dealing with an issue that’s not of God. And you can call it an addiction or whatever you want, but it’s something that’s not of God. And I’ve been trying to work hard at stopping it. But all my works, they don’t do anything. In fact, the harder I work at stopping it, the worse it seems to get, not the better. Have you ever noticed that with stuff that you tried to do?

However, when I stop trying to solve it using my own effort, and I pray to God instead, the addictive feelings go away.

A normal prayer for me is to ask God to take that temptation away from me. And that’s how I pray, for God to take that temptation away from me, and the addictive feelings seem to melt away.

And I love that because it solidifies in me that it’s the faith of knowing that my prayers are answered by God, that when I do pray that, that it’s going to happen, and it does.

But here’s the thing. We have to be careful with things that get taken out of our lives, because nothing can exist in a vacuum. Luke 11:24-26. And I recommend again, read all of Luke 11 It’s not long either. Meditate on what God shows you what’s there. So maybe one day, or one week, you pick Galatians 5. Then the next day or the next week, pick Luke 11. Take 10 to 15 minutes, maybe sit down in a quiet place, read it over, maybe two or three times.

Ask God to highlight what he wants you to learn through these. I’m going to pick on Luke 11:24-26 because this tells me a lot.

Jesus had just cast out a demon and he’s talking about unclean spirits. And he says, “when the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, and finding none it says ‘hey, I’ll return to my house from which I came.’ And when it comes back and finds the house swept and put in order, then it goes and brings seven other spirits more evil than itself and they enter and dwell there. And the last day for that person is worse than the first.”

That Scripture is kind of tough to understand sometimes, so think about it this way. Let’s say you own a house and you’ve rented it to someone, and the person that you rented it from is not a good person.

I believe that there are two kinds of people in this world: Givers and takers. And takers will take anything they can, and then they walk away without worrying about what the consequences are.

So let’s say you’ve rented your house to some takers. And they’ve trashed the house. And after the first month or two, they’ve never paid any rent. And with COVID, property owners weren’t allowed to evict people from houses for quite a long time, for over a year, whether they paid rent or not. It was a tough time for house owners.

So let’s say these takers trash the house, and you finally were able to get them kicked out. Then you work really hard and you get the house nice and clean and pristine. Once again, it finally looks all sparkly.

Then you go away for a year or so and you leave it there. You don’t rent it out again, you just leave it there. When you come back, you find out the people that had been kicked out illegally came back to the house, invited some other families that are takers also, and it was even worse. They tore open the walls, tore out the copper, just did terrible things to the house. It’s even worse than it was when they left it the first time.

Nothing can exist in a vacuum, especially inside of us. You can’t take something away without putting something else there. So when that bad spirit, when that evil spirit gets taken out of your life, replace it with something else; replace it with reading the Bible, praying to God, volunteering… whatever it might be.

Remember, nothing exists in a vacuum.

You can’t just take something away and have nothing there, because it’s very possible that, if you leave nothing there, even worse things will come back.

So replace it with better things. And to me, that’s one way of exhibiting the Fruit of the Spirit.

The Fruit of the Spirit is actually something that we get by having faith; it’s not something we can work toward. Think of how you can grow your faith. And maybe you might say, “hey, I want to grow my faith by reading my Bible.” So for a day or two, you read your Bible more, and then you stop reading it as much. And then you say, “Well, I tried, it didn’t work out. I failed that that so I’m going to do something else or just go back to what I was doing before.”

I think sometimes we try too hard, because the more we try, especially with matters of faith, I think the more that we try, the worse it gets, because we’re sinful people, unfortunately, all the way back to Adam and Eve.

There have been very few people in this world that haven’t been full of sin. So maybe stop trying. Instead of trying, maybe practice. Think about it, when you try something and you fail to “oh, I tried. I’m not going to do it again, but I tried.”

But when’s the last time you failed while you were practicing something? You don’t fail while you’re practicing.

So rather than trying to read your Bible, practice reading your Bible. Practice praying to God and meditating on his answers; practice different types of prayers.

I started practicing just praying to God several times a day, even simple prayers, like I worked out today and I thanked God for giving me the energy to work out. That’s a prayer.

I asked God to continue to give me the energy tomorrow.

Yesterday, I did not have the energy to work out. I thanked God for giving me the energy to get out of bed that day, because that was a tough day.

And for those of you that don’t know, I have several health issues that I’ve been dealing with. And I’ve prayed to God to get rid of them. And no, he hasn’t healed me and no, I don’t know why.

But in my infirmity, I still believe that God is the Ruler of my life.

And that’s what faith is really about. And no, I haven’t been there my whole life. It has taken me quite a long time to get to this place.

Oh, and I’m not done. There are still so many times when I don’t trust God enough with something or don’t trust him at all. Like that one thing that’s going on in my life that I’m battling against. There’s a part of me that knows the answer; there’s a part of me that knows all I need to do is have faith. And I can’t figure out why I don’t have enough faith, but that’s a part of life, it happens

But here’s the big thing about the Fruit of the Spirit. We’ve got those nine things that are the Fruit of the Spirit, but the Fruit of the Spirit isn’t something that we have to work toward; it’s something that is shown in our lives when the Spirit of God is stronger in us.

So it has nothing to do with our works. It has nothing to do with trying. It doesn’t even have anything to do with reading our Bible. The Fruit of the Spirit, we get that fruit naturally, the more that we trust the Spirit of God in us; and the Spirit of God is in all of us.

The Bible tells us that Jesus left us with the Spirit of God (John 14:15-17). And it’s been the time of the Spirit of God ever since Jesus died. And he has been here for all believers.

(In the podcast, I said: “Personally, I believe the Spirit of God is in every person on the earth, but only the believers feel that spirit. So it’s there for everybody to access, but you have to be a believer to actually access that.” That is wrong, it is not Biblically accurate. My apologies for that.)

And again, it’s not works that does that; it’s faith. T

he first step in faith is believing that God is God, isn’t it?

Think about it, you’ve already got that amount of faith. You’re listening to this podcast, you probably believe that God is God, or you want to believe it more than you have before. And that’s another part of it.

Praise God during your progress. As you progress, as your faith gets better, praise God for it.

Thank him for each successful step, no matter how small. Like I said, I did a workout today and it was shoulders and arms. And it’s actually that one’s a slightly easier workout for me, I don’t use heavy weights, I mostly uses 25 pound dumbbells; that’s all I do. My workout is at home, I don’t go to a gym or anything.

All I have is a set of dumbbells that I use, so I don’t use super heavy weights. But it’s enough for me, it’s the kind of workout that I want to do. The workout yesterday was more of an aerobic style workout. It was an hour long of aerobics, and it’s a tough workout for me. I call it one of my brutal workouts. I probably shouldn’t call it that. But unfortunately, yesterday, I simply didn’t have the energy to do it. So now I’m wondering later on today, will God give me the energy to do that one too? Maybe I’ll do two in one day. But I’m trusting God to show that in my life, because I also don’t want to work out too much. My health issues have stopped me from working out much for the past few years.

I’m starting to feel better and get better, thank you Lord!

But I also don’t want to overdo it. And I have to trust in God to tell me whether or not I’m overdoing it. And to me, that’s also a part of the Fruit of the Spirit; it’s listening to the Spirit of God in telling us when we’re not doing enough in one area and when we’re doing too much.

And we there can be times when we’re not doing enough. We can practice kindness. We can practice goodness. We can practice faithfulness. We can practice love and joy.

Love is a verb, it’s not a noun, it’s an action, and there are ways to practice that.

Joy is a verb, it’s an action, we can practice joy.

We don’t have to be happy in every situation, but that doesn’t mean we can’t be filled with joy in every situation. And I do believe that the Fruit of the Spirit will bring those out in us even more.

So the more that we have faith in God, the more that we have faith in God’s Spirit, the more that fruit will automatically start to show through us.

And I believe that this podcast is another thing. I started this podcast less than a year ago. I thought about it for many years, but I don’t think before I had the faith to do it.

My faith needed to grow more before I could start this podcast.

And like I said, Oh, I’m not done. I have way more things I need to work on. Part of the reason why I do this podcast is to grow my faith. I get to study probably five to 10 times as much as I talk about on each podcast. It helps me to grow my faith in God. And I thank God for that as well.

I also think God for you. If you need prayer, Contact me. I’d be happy to pray for you.

You have a great day and I’ll talk to you next time.
